So, this is one of my most favorite shows. And my daughter digs it too. What I think is funny, though, is the dances that she does like. I thought it would be a fun feature on this here blog of mine to do a review each week on this show based on our opinions. Because, frankly, the opinions of a four year old ballerina are quite enlightening and funny.
So, without further ado….this week’s SYTYCD review.
One thing I’d like to mention before we get going is the
special show that they did on Monday. I
liked it. I liked that they featured the
dancers in their style, but it all came off just a little bit weird for
me. Especially the three person
ballroom. I don’t know…what did you
think? The best part about the whole
show was the opening 20-person number.
It was like an old movie. I could
have watched that for hours. It also
made me want to buy some Gap khakis. (Marketing! Gets you every time!)
Okay, so the first number this week was the jive with
Phillip and Channing. Don’t remember who
they are? Yeah, at this point I don’t
either. Okay, they are the tapper and
the really athletic girl that does back flips on the beach. And they are dancing to…Rockin’ Robin? Okay.
To my untrained eye, I thought it was…okay. I thought he did a MUCH better job than she
did. You could tell that they were
thinking too much about each and every movement and step, and that should never
show up on your face.
Emmy: *confused look*
Mommy: “Do you like this one?”
Emmy: “…..No. No” *concerned look*
Second, we have a Tyce Broadway number. Yah! I
love me some Broadway. Ashleigh (married
girl) and Jakob (contemporary dancer I couldn’t pick out of a lineup). This was….hmm…weird. Did it bother anyone else that their costumes
so didn’t seem to go together? I’m guessing
that this would make sense in the context of the actual play. They just didn’t seem to gel to me, like they
were dancing two separate pieces up there.
I thought it was overall good, though, comparatively.
Emmy: “I don’t like this.”
Next up, hip hop! Ariana (random contemporary girl) and Peter
(the other tapper boy). Yeah, I’m
excited about this. And then I see
it. Boo!
Gah! This was all kinds of awful,
just all over the place. The costumes
stunk. I didn’t like the music with the
dance – separately good, together, just…bad choices, dude. And the dancing was just…ugh.
Emmy: “I like
it! They are robots! And she loves him! Hee…she gave him a moochy.”
Next, Foxtrot. Which
you always feel bad for the dancers when they pull something like the
Foxtrot. Because, really…the foxtrot is
never good for the votes. Luckily, they
are not dancing for votes this week, but still.
Dancers are Russell (the krump guy with dreads) and Noelle (random
contemporary girl). Oh, even worse,
Noelle injured herself and Russell has to dance with the choreographer. Poor guy. And poor choreographer. I kind of thought that he did pretty well,
considering. I really hope that the
judges keep him around. I like him.
Emmy: “I want to
watch a commercial.”
Onto contemporary, which is always a crapshoot for me. Ooooh, Travis Wall choreographed though. This should be good. This is danced by Bianca (tapper) and Viktor
(random contemporary dancer). I really,
really loved this. I thought it was
awesome. Danced well and just very
entertaining. Loved it.
Emmy: “Ooooooooooooh.”
(when they did the lift when Bianca fell down his body upside down)
“That was pretty.”
Time for the cha cha, which yeah. So depends.
But! They have Karen (the latin
dancer) and Kevin (I think he’s a hip hop dancer?), so this should be really
good. And OMG! They are doing the Glee version of Push
It. For the cha cha. This just became awesome in so many ways. This was sooooooooo good. Like so, so good. She was just incredible. And Kevin really held his own.
Emmy: *giggle* “She’s
shaking her butt.” *giggles*
Mommy: “So, did you like it?”
Emmy: “Yes. It was so good.”
Mommy: “Why did you like it?”
Emmy: “Because that girl can really
dance. She is such a good dancer.”
Onto jazz, with Sonja, which is always kind of scary. Ryan (married guy) and Ellenore (jazz? I
think) are fallen angels. It’s this kind
of number which just always makes me feel a little art stupid, if you know what
I mean. Like, I just cannot tell the
difference if good dancers or bad dancers were doing this if it was supposed to
be good or bad. I just stare and look
confused.
Emmy: “What are they
doing?”
Mommy: “I….don’t….know. I think they are…angels?”
Emmy: “Why are there two boys?”
Mommy: “Honey, that one is a girl. She just has short hair. And isn’t wearing a dress. Just feathers. And yes, they are both dancing similar, but
that one is a girl.”
Emmy: “Mommy, that is a boy.”
Mommy: “So, do you like this?”
Emmy: “No. This is not good. It needs a girl.”
Next up, we have the waltz, which….yawn. This is always boring and always awful and I feel just terrible for anyone who pulls this in a week. Pauline and Brandon. Pauline is the jazz girl and Brandon is a last second replacement for Billy Bell, who left due to sickness. We find out that Brandon had like a day to learn this dance. Way to stack the deck for them, producers. Seriously. First, the waltz and then a last second replacement? These poor kids never even had a chance. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, yep, its just about as boring as I thought it would be.
Emmy: *grinning from
ear to ear*
Mommy: “Do you like this one?”
Emmy: *full of awe* “I love this one, Mommy. She’s….a princess.”
Back to hip hop. Oh,
this should be good. Legacy (the b-boy)
and Kathryn (random contemporary girl).
Oh guys. Oh guys. This was so cool. They were cavemen? Or something?
To a Missy Elliot song. Humorous
and just….good. Really, really
good. This was definitely the best of
the night for me.
Emmy: *laughing* “They are shaking their butts.”
Mommy: “So, does that mean you like it?”
Emmy: “Yes, that was so funny. I liked it when that girl hitted that boy in
the face.”
Finally, disco! I’m
kind of a sucker for the disco numbers, I’ve got to tell you. They are always so fast and fierce. This one features Mollee (blonde, hyper jazz
girl) and Nathan (who I think is another contemporary boy?). It’s….disco.
Fast, fun, lots of twirls and fun lifts and neat to watch.
Emmy: “Ooooh. I like her sparkly dress. Oh look, she spinning on his head.”
Mommy: “So….good?”
Emmy: “I wish that she would hit that
boy like the other girl. That would make
it really good.”
So there you have it folks. Emmy’s favorite of the night was the waltz and the first hip-hop number which were like my least favorites. My top two were the cha cha and the caveman hip hop. At this point, I really don’t care who gets eliminated. I don’t get invested into the dancers until about the top 10, so until then, you won’t hear any cries of agony from me about who gets the boot. What did you think? What was your favorite dance? Also, if you could “borrow” any one of the dancer’s talent for a day, who’s would it be?
